1) Get clear of any personal sympathies or antipathies towards the authors. Otherwise, refuse the review.
2) If the topic of the article is far off to your own research interest or it collides with it in a competitive manner, refuse the review.
3) If you have no time to read the article thoroughly within the given time, refuse the review.
4) If you newer heard about the authors and their work, check their work in databases (Chemical Abstracts, Citation Index, Scopus, etc.).
5) If something is not clear, do not hesitate to ask questions. The authors will appreciate any clarification.
6) Try to keep your comments polite, even though something is evidently wrong. Any constructive feedback will be appreciated by the authors.
7) Try to keep your focus on the merits of the article. If the English is not satisfactory, suggest re-checking of the manuscript.
8) If you suspect plagiarism or any other case of scientific misconduct, please inform the editor immediately.
9) Do not hesitate to reject the article if it fails to meet the basic requirements. If the article obviously contains important data consider suggesting major revisions or resubmitting instead.
10) Be prepared for authors objections to your review.
If everything goes on smoothly, your comments and questions will help the authors to improve their article.
